Taking Down the Masts

Catskill, NY
Issuma is heading for the Erie Canal, which has low bridges, so the masts need to be taken down (unstepped) for the trip. It is a big job to take down the masts (and an even bigger one to put them back up again). The ever-helpful Hop-O-Nose marina crew in picturesque Catskill Creek did most of the work (I helped), lifting the masts with their crane and building the wooden supports to hold them aboard. In the picture, the mainmast is sitting on the dock, and the foremast is still stepped. All the stuff on deck normally is part of the rig (ie sails), or stored in the keel well (the keel has been lifted up to reduce the draft and drag).
