Mindelo, Sao Vicente, Cabo Verde
We arrived in the charming port of Mindelo, on the island of Sao Vicente, in the Cape Verde Islands yesterday afternoon.
Trade Winds
For the fourth day, we are broad-reaching downwind in light winds (Force 3 — 7 to 10 knots), under fisherman and poled-out genoa. The skies are nice and cloudy this morning (cloudy days outside in the tropics are much cooler than sunny ones).
Position Update
The very light wind has picked up to Force 3 (7-10 knots), and we are running along nicely, under fisherman and poled-out genoa.
Ham at sea
The shops in the Canaries had a lot of Iberian hams for sale. This is salt-cured meat, which seemed like it would keep well at sea. So we hung one off the backstay and covered it with an old sheet to keep the sun off. Periodically, we cut a piece off. So far, the meat is still very good.
South of Canary Islands
We left El Hierro, the southern-most Canary Island, Tuesday afternoon. Winds have been very light so far…0-10 knots.
